Many people ask "how do you train a therapy dog?"
While there is training involved so your therapy dog knows what is expected of her and what to do, the training workshop's first priority is helping the handlers to know if they and their dogs are right for therapy work, what type(s) of therapy work would be best for the teams, and what training they need to be good therapy dog teams. Our Therapy Dog workshop will give you information on the many ways therapy dogs are used and the places that welcome therapy dogs.
Therapy dogs and their handlers must have solid temperments. They cannot be easily upset by sudden loud or unexpected noises, moving objects, crowded areas or emotional situations. Some of these things can be trained for but there has to be some innate calmness to be a succesful Therapy dog team. Both the handler and dog must be willing to give unconditional love. This is not just a hobby for your dog. Therapy dog work is a serious commitment to give to others.
This day-long workshop will be discussion, observation of registered therapy dog teams, and hands-on training. All dogs attending the workshop must have proof of a current negative fecal exam from your veterinarian. Fee includes all materials, continental breakfast, snacks, lunch, and a goodie bag. Cost for one handler/one dog -- $90, additional handlers/auditors only -- $40.
